My Story

Introduction

Hi Friend! I’m Coach Teddy Sullivan, and I’ve been deeply immersed in the world of cross country running and coaching since 2009. My passion for running was sparked in middle school, where I felt safe and cared for by two coaches who I consider as grandparents. My passion developed in high school, when I saw how impactful consistent training can be.

My Rise, Fall, and New Beginnings (2011-15)

I discovered quickly in high school that I had some innate running talent. I continued working hard to cultivate my talent and eventually cracked the Varsity top 7 in my freshman year. I felt transformed and fulfilled in a way I had not before. I was confident. I was self-assured. I struggled with hip injuries later that spring, which most likely stemmed from being tackled by a football lineman in gym class during our rolling skate section one year prior (it hurt – a lot!). After many bouts in physical therapy, hundreds of miles on a bike, many doctors appointments, and a year of wondering if my injury would heal in time to finish my high school career, the truth came crashing down on me: I was done. Not by choice, but that was it. However, when we’re at the end of something, it normally means the start of something new.

My little sister, Sophie has always been my buddy. There’s a six-year gap between us, but that did not impact our friendship. Coincidentally (poetically, maybe), my running career officially ended the same year hers began. Sometime before her season began, the idea of being her coach entered my mind. I quickly asked her Head Coach if I could help out, mostly to spend some quality time with my sister. I quickly found out that coaching brought me a lot of joy in guiding and caring for younger people.

My Coaching Philosophy

At the core of my coaching philosophy lies a deep commitment to the overall well-being of my athletes—both physically and mentally. As a compassionate coach, I emphasize self-care, discipline, and honest communication. Each coaching interaction is thoughtfully designed to impart a valuable lesson, encouraging reflection and personal growth. With a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and my full-time career as a mental health therapist*, I am uniquely equipped to guide athletes through mental training and specialized, individualized training components.

*Note: My professional interest is in adolescent development.

I’m Your Coach (Why Choose Me)

One of my proudest coaching moments was leading my team to victory in 10 out of 12 possible championship titles at The Suburban Parochial League conference meet in 2019. Beyond accolades, I find immense joy in helping runners of all backgrounds develop self-confidence and a genuine passion for both themselves and running. Your child will feel genuinely cared for if they choose to run under my guidance.

Training Principles

My coaching methodology revolves around a balanced approach. A healthy mileage progression, a mix of easy and hard days, and an emphasis on rest and recovery are the foundations of my training plans. I integrate daily post-run strengthening and strides for speed work, along with crucial mental training and form training.

I don’t Cookie-Cutter Coach

I firmly believe that every athlete is unique, deserving of tailored guidance. I start by thoroughly understanding each athlete’s running history through detailed forms and one-on-one Zoom meetings. As I continually learn more about my athletes, I adjust and refine their training plans to meet their evolving needs. Every relationship grows through listening and genuine care.

Coaching Sessions

I offer both online and in-person coaching sessions. In our virtual sessions, we meet on Zoom 2-5 days per week (depending on the plan) for 15 minutes to discuss progress, successes, challenges, life, and our daily lesson. Additionally, I’m in the process of developing group training sessions to foster a supportive running community in Porter County, Indiana (Valparaiso, Portage, Chesterton, etc.).

Core Values

Two essential pillars of my coaching approach are mental training and consistency. I firmly believe in the power of a strong mind and consistent effort to achieve lasting success. Practice makes permanent and racing must be prepared for.

Each Year Is Cumulative (Continuous Growth)

As a coach, I’m dedicated to continuous growth and learning. I stay up-to-date with the latest coaching techniques and sports science by following renowned coaches and listening to podcasts. My full-time work in Mental Health Counseling further enhances my people skills and understanding of athlete well-being.

Beyond Coaching

Outside of coaching, I take long walks in the woods, read a ton, and spend time with my fiance and my two kitties.
